Our Lady of Bitterness

Every Holy Wednesday we travel to the neighbouring city of Jerez de la Frontera to accompany Our Lady of Bitterness, the image of the popular Brotherhood of La Amargura (Bitterness in Spanish).

The Holy Week of Jerez enjoys great renown, so for us it has always been important to pay it at least one visit. And what better way to do so than behind Our Lady of Bitterness, an image of great nobility that we have been accompanying for over twenty years.

This canopy float is the largest in Jerez, with eight beams of six costaleros (bearers) each. Particularly striking are its valances and its unusually sky-blue ceiling, as well as the impressive mantle of peacock-blue Lyon velvet, designed by Manuel Seco Velasco, whose proposal won a competition organised by the Brotherhood of El Amor (Love) of Seville.

The repertoire we perform is, broadly speaking, cheerful, although there is always room for classical marches and more popular ones, depending on the moment and the part of the route the procession is passing through. The Brotherhood of La Amargura is undoubtedly one of the most prominent brotherhoods in terms of popularity and devotion in the Holy Week of Jerez.
